Before you had an iconic shoe, it was Nike Air Bo Turf, back in 1990, your Madden 22 coins name was on by wearing the Nike Air Trainer 3, which became known as your shoe. What memories do you have surrounding those shoes? Air Trainer 3?
Well, I’ll put it like this. In 1969, when I was in the very first grade in rural Alabama during winter, it was in the mid-30s outside. And I was required to go to school naked. Shoes were not allowed. This isn’t for sentimental reasons or to tell a sad story. But I remember my brother being just a few blocks away from our house. I’m standing at the front door. The sister I was with stood just a short distance from him,, and another sister was waiting at the bus stop. When my sister at the bus stop saw the bus crest the hill a couple of blocks away, she would shout towards my younger sister, who would yell to my brother, and then my brother would yell at me. After that, I’d run out the door , barefoot. When my brother came to my first sister, I would’ve caught him earlier. By the time we got there, I’m 15, 20 yards from my sister and brother. From attending school in bare feet in the winter of 1969 to growing older and wearing a sneaker inspired by me … It was fortunate.
After some 30 odd years, some people still boast about that shoe and collect the shoes. A couple of weeks ago a close friend who I am, Anthony Anderson, the comedian, texted me, ‘Hey, Bo! I’m doing a performance about all my sneakers. I’m unable to locate those Air Shoes. I’d like to have a pair of your shoes! It happened that I had a pair at my desk. I thought, ‘Hey, well, I got a pair of these here. I’ll send the pair to you. It’s these moments those when I just sit back and think, “Wow.’
This NFL season, New York Giants running back Nike player Saquon Barkley was gifted his own model of the Air Trainer 3. What did it feel like watch him pay homage to you through the sneakers?
I gifted him with these shoes. It was as if I said, ‘Grasshopper, it’s your opportunity to carry this torch. You must keep it up. I’m sure Saquon will do a great job at it. Saquon is a very good child. He reminds me a much of me. He’s strong and has his head in the right direction. This is the thing that amazes me the most. It’s not his statistics. I like the way he carries himself.
There will always be one Bo Jackson. But when you consider the NFL running backs that have come after you, which have the most resemblance to you?
I can only imagine two names — Saquon and Derrick Henry — on the sheer strength, power and the ability to navigate between the field and defense. They don’t necessarily have the speed that I did. But they’ve made this work. They are very successful in what they do. They’re also considered to be the top running backs in the game today.
If you take a look back at your professional career, what’s the buy Madden nfl 22 coins most memorable play you made that you believe could have been the result of a video game?
