Before you got your signature shoe which was the Nike Air Bo Turf, in 1990, you starred in Madden nfl 22 coins your first Nike Air Trainer 3, which became known as your shoe. What are your memories regarding that Air Trainer 3?
Well, I’ll put it to you like this. In 1969 my time in the first grade in my home in rural Alabama in the winter, it was between 30 and 40 degrees out. And I had to attend school without shoes. There were no shoes. I’m not saying this for the sake of sympathy or as a sob story. But I can remember my brother being just a few blocks away from our house. I’m in the front yard. There was a sister standing just a one block from his brother, and my other sister was at the bus station. When my sister at the bus stop could see the bus go up the hill just a few block away she’d yell at my sister, who would yell at my brother. Then my brother would yell to me. Then , I’d head out the door with my feet in the air. At the point that my brother came to my sister’s house I’d have caught him by the time he reached me. When we finally got at the stop for buses I’m 15or 20 feet ahead of my sister and brother. From schooling barefoot in the winter of 1969 to growing up and having an athletic shoe that was inspired by me … I was fortunate.
After 30 odd years, people still brag about that shoe and have a collection of the shoes. In the last few weeks I had a friend who I am, Anthony Anderson, the comedian, he texts me, ‘Hey, Bo! I’m doing a performance about all my sneakers. I’m unable to locate the Air trainers you have. I’m looking for a pair that you have! It just happened that I found a pair inside my workplace. I said, ‘Hey, I have the shoes here. You can send your pair. It’s those moments like these that I can sit back and think, “Wow.’
In this NFL season New York Giants running back Nike sportsman Saquon Barkley received his very own variant of the Air Trainer 3. How was it to have him pay homage you through the sneakers?
I blessed him with those shoes. It was like telling him”Grasshopper! It’s your moment to carry this torch. You have to take it seriously. I’m confident that Saquon will be able to do a fine job of that. Saquon is a very good child. He reminds me of a much of me. He’s fast and strong, and keeps his head straight. That’s the thing that impresses me the most. It’s not his statistics. I love how the man carries himself.
